KState

Today we took about 40 students from KCK high schools to Manhattan for College For A Day at KState.

Riding a yellow school bus on I70 at 65 mph through the great plains with a bus full of 16,17 year old kids is a great meditation. Going was a practice in my own patience in regard to my normal mode of transport and relative speed. We made the trip fun by telling stories about the prairie lands and fibs about what KState is like. Most of these kids haven't been outside the metro so when I told them that the abandon quickshop at exit 313 was the library and the stadium was a short walk down the hill to the valley of the Konza prairie they wanted to turn around and go home.
The day was a good trip down memory lane. It had been 10 years at least since I was on campus at KSU. They sure have been using their tuition money well. Its really glitzy inside. I guess that's one way to get enrollment up.
The bus ride home is a different meditation. Some of the kids are sleeping quietly and relaxing from a day of campus tours and cafeteria food. Other kids are fired up and asking tons of questions about applying to school. That is just satisfying because that's exactly why we went. But the kids that are making bird noises every 3 minutes and asking if we can stop at the next subway. Those are the ones who are making my meditation about enjoying the overall success of the efforts expended while working with the kids who have good energy and not being distracted by the few who need to have the energy focused onto them for negative reason.
Ooooooommmmmmmmm..............
Ahhhh that's better.
God I love my job.
