Jersey Mike's, Lawrence, KS

Got word of a fine sandwich franchise while attending class at Topeka High School. Apparently this new place serves fresh deli style sandwiches on bread baked on site daily. The locally owned and operated shop slices their meat to order and even roasts their own beef.

I figured this was right up my alley. As I drove back to KCK I stopped in Lawrence to have a bite. It turned out to be better than I expected.

The menu reads like an old school italian deli counter with a Nile-ist New Jersey bent. What I mean is, I had no idea what cappacuollo or proscuittini was but I knew I love proscuitto and provolone. The Nile-ist bent comes from the seemingly nonsensical numbering system. My sandwich, the number 4 was right above #11 which was next to #56, then #43 etc. So I wasn't sure and as a restaurant connoisseur I figured I should ask to see how the 'help' could help.

My inquiry about what cappacuolo was answered politely and was followed by a pleasant dialogue with the meat slicing guy named Mike aka Jeremy.(I don't quite recall exactly what he said it was but it was hella tasty)

The meat was fresh, the bread was light, crusty and not made from pre-made factory "fresh" doe. I really enjoyed the atmosphere of the dining room and especially appreciated the Pepsi products in the fountain.

My friends in Topeka mentioned that the prices were a little high due to the high quality of the ingredients. Where I come from, $7.99 with tax is what you can expect to pay for a dbl chz, fries and a medium DP at BK. I wasn't even phased by the bill. I had my Pepsi on ice, my sea salt and vinegar chips, and my #4 all while listening to Pres. Bush talk to America about small business and the financial situation.

As I hit the road for KCK I will be sippin my free refill and plannin my next visit to this airy, bright and open sandwich shop.
